Chapter 8 - The Father's Choice

Rebecca was roughly escorted inside the precinct, screaming and cursing my name until the heavy doors slammed shut behind her.
My father stood frozen in the parking lot, completely paralyzed by the catastrophic collapse of his entire life.
The lead officer turned to him with a deeply stern, unforgiving expression.
"Sir, according to that tape, you were complicit in the perjury that established this fraudulent guardianship," the officer stated.
My father looked at the ground, unable to meet the eyes of the policeman or his own children.
"I didn't know about the money," my father whispered pathetically, a broken man clinging to a single shred of innocence.
"I just wanted to save the business."
"You wanted to save a failing landscaping company by destroying your son's entire future," I corrected him, my voice devoid of any sympathy.
"We need you to come inside for questioning, sir," the officer said, gesturing toward the doors.
Before my father walked away, he finally looked up and met Ethan's gaze.
Tears were streaming freely down his weathered cheeks, filled with genuine, profound regret.
"I am so incredibly sorry, Ethan," my father choked out, his voice cracking with immense sorrow.
"I failed you, and I failed your mother, and I will spend the rest of my life trying to make it right."
Ethan stood tall, the terrified boy from the graduation party completely replaced by a strong, resilient young man.
"You can start making it right by telling the detectives the absolute truth about the judge," Ethan told him firmly.
"Don't try to protect her anymore."
My father nodded slowly, accepting his fate, and walked silently into the police station alongside the officer.
I wrapped my arm around Ethan's shoulder, feeling a massive, invisible weight finally lift from both of our chests.
We spent the next six hours sitting in small interrogation rooms, giving detailed statements to financial crimes detectives.
Marcus faxed over the complete dossier of banking records, providing undeniable proof of Rebecca's massive offshore transfers.
The evidence was entirely overwhelming, and Rebecca's expensive lawyer couldn't do a single thing to stop the impending federal indictment.
By midnight, the detectives finally told us we were free to go.

We walked back out to the old Ford truck, the cool night air feeling incredibly clean and refreshing.
The nightmare was finally over, but the difficult work of rebuilding our lives was just beginning.
