Chapter 6 - The Warning

After the deposition abruptly ended, I followed Olivia into the hallway.
She was pacing back and forth, furiously texting someone on her phone.
“Olivia, wait,” I said, stepping toward her.
She whipped around, her eyes narrowing into angry slits.
“Did you come to gloat, Sarah?” she spat viciously.
“No, I came to give you something important,” I replied, pulling a thick folder from my bag.
I held out the private investigator’s report regarding Carter’s finances.
“This is a background check on Carter,” I explained calmly.
“He is broke, Olivia. He is drowning in debt and has multiple lawsuits against him.”
Olivia stared at the folder but refused to take it from my hands.
She let out a harsh, mocking laugh.
“You are pathetic, Sarah,” she sneered, crossing her arms.
“You won the stupid vineyard, and now you can’t stand the fact that I am marrying a man richer than your husband.”
“Read the papers, Olivia,” I pleaded one last time.
“He is using you just like you tried to use me.”
My mother emerged from the conference room and quickly rushed to Olivia’s side.
“Don’t listen to a word she says!” my mother barked at me.
“She is just a jealous, bitter woman trying to ruin your special day.”
I realized in that exact moment that I could not save people who were determined to drown.
I dropped the folder onto a nearby chair.
“I tried,” I said softly, looking at both of them for what felt like the very last time.
“Do not ever contact me again.”
I turned my back and walked away, feeling a massive weight lift from my shoulders.

I had fulfilled my moral obligation.
The rest of their story was entirely up to them.
