Chapter 9 - Ultimate Betrayal

An FBI supervisor, a stern woman with graying hair, approached us with a notepad.
"Dr. Miller, we need the authentic memory card," she requested professionally.
I reached into my clothing, retrieved the real memory card, and handed it over.
"This contains everything you need to convict Vance and his entire network," I told her.
The supervisor nodded, securing the evidence in a plastic bag.
"We will need statements from both of you, and unfortunately, your sister will be taken into custody."
Brooke’s head snapped up, her expression morphing from gratitude to sheer panic.
"Custody? No, I am the victim here, they kidnapped me!" she shrieked, pointing at the handcuffed men.
"You committed wire fraud, identity theft, and attempted extortion of federal agents," the supervisor listed dryly.
Brooke scrambled to her feet, lunging toward me and grabbing my coat.
"Emily, tell them I was confused, tell them you gave me permission to use the card!" she begged frantically.
"I will not perjure myself for you, Brooke," I said, stepping back from her grasp.
Brooke’s face twisted into an ugly, familiar sneer.
"You always hated me because Mom and Dad loved me more!" she spat venomously.
"You are just jealous that I got the ring you wanted!"
Even surrounded by federal agents and facing prison, her narcissism remained entirely intact.
"Take her away," the supervisor sighed, gesturing to two deputies.
As they placed handcuffs on my crying sister, my phone buzzed yet again.
It was my father.
I answered the call and put it on speakerphone so Daniel could hear.
"Emily, is Brooke safe? Did you fix it?" my father demanded, his voice thick with anxiety.
"Brooke is safe from the cartel, Dad," I replied evenly.
"Oh, thank God. Bring her home immediately, your mother is a wreck," he commanded.
May you like
"I cannot do that, Dad," I stated.
"She is on her way to federal prison."
