Chapter 8 - The Drop

The tension in the freezing air was thick enough to cut with a scalpel.
Brooke stood completely paralyzed with fear, staring at the collapsed agent at our feet.
"Shoot her!" one of the guards yelled, raising his rifle.
"If I die, he dies, and you lose your two million dollars!" I screamed back, holding up a second, empty syringe like a detonator.
"The real memory card is hidden, and only I know where it is!"
The guards hesitated again, lowering their weapons slightly.
Suddenly, the deafening sound of helicopter rotors chopped through the fog overhead.
Blinding spotlights hit the pier, illuminating the rusted shipping containers in stark white light.
"FBI! Drop your weapons immediately!" a voice boomed over a loudspeaker.
Daniel’s people had finally arrived.
The cartel guards looked at the sky, then at each other, and made a split-second decision.
They dropped their rifles and raised their hands in surrender.
Brooke collapsed to the ground, sobbing uncontrollably as heavily armed tactical agents swarmed the pier.
Daniel ran out from the shadows, wrapping his arms around me in a crushing hug.
"You are completely insane, do you know that?" he breathed against my hair.
"I am a professional," I replied, my hands finally beginning to shake as the adrenaline crashed.
I knelt beside Agent Harris, whose face was turning a dangerous shade of blue.
I administered a small dose of the reversal agent, just enough to keep his diaphragm functioning so he wouldn't suffocate before going to prison.
The FBI agents secured the corrupt handlers and the cartel guards, reading them their rights.
Brooke was sitting on the wet pavement, wrapped in a foil emergency blanket provided by a paramedic.
I walked over to her, looking down at the sister who had caused this entire nightmare.

"Emily... thank you," she whispered, looking up at me with tear-streaked mascara.
"Save it, Brooke," I said coldly.
