Chapter 8 - The Hostile Takeover Complete

By month six, the dust had fully settled.

Arthur Sterling was convicted on forty-two counts of federal fraud and embezzlement. The judge, disgusted by his absolute lack of remorse and his attempts to frame his own daughters, handed down a brutal sentence: thirty years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary. Given his age, it was a death sentence.

Chloe didn't fare much better. Despite her desperate attempts to flip on our father, the prosecutors had enough evidence of her own direct forgery. She received twelve years without the possibility of early parole.

The Sterling legacy was dead and buried.

Apex Logistics, however, was thriving.

Under my leadership and Vanguard’s financial backing, we had cornered the market. My V2 algorithm was flawless. We were securing government contracts, expanding internationally, and completely dominating the supply chain sector.

Julian and I were sitting in the boardroom late one Friday evening, reviewing the quarterly earnings.

"Profits are up four hundred percent," Julian smiled, leaning back in his leather chair and swirling a glass of expensive bourbon. "Real profits. Not your father's ghost numbers."

"We just acquired the European shipping routes," I said, closing my laptop with a satisfying snap. "The integration will be seamless. The code is already prepped."

Julian stood up, walking around the long mahogany table. He pulled me out of my chair and wrapped his arms around me. Even after all the chaos, the stress, and the corporate warfare, his touch was the safest place in the world.

"You did it," Julian murmured, kissing the top of my head. "You took back exactly what belonged to you."

"We did it," I corrected him, resting my head against his chest, listening to the strong, steady beat of his heart. "You didn't have to blow your undercover operation just to stand up for me at the altar. You could have waited."

Julian pulled back, looking down into my eyes with an intensity that took my breath away.

"Elena, I bought the debt to destroy Arthur. But I married you because I love you. The moment he insulted you in front of that crowd... the operation ceased to matter. No one disrespects my wife."
