Chapter 5 - The Aftermath

We didn't go on our honeymoon right away.
Instead, Monday morning found me standing in the lobby of the Sterling Logistics headquarters. The massive glass building in the center of the city felt different today. The air wasn't thick with the oppressive, toxic anxiety my father had cultivated.
Julian walked beside me, wearing a sharp navy suit, looking every bit the billionaire titan he truly was.
We took the private elevator to the executive floor.
When the silver doors slid open, the entire administrative staff froze. They had all seen the news. My father's arrest had made national headlines. "LOGISTICS TYCOON ARRESTED IN $80M WEDDING DAY STING" was plastered across the front page of the Wall Street Journal.
I walked straight past the panicked receptionists and pushed open the heavy mahogany doors to the CEO’s office.
My father’s massive desk was still covered in the files he had been working on before the wedding. His ridiculous, overly expensive abstract art still hung on the walls.
"It's a nice office," Julian remarked, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sprawling city skyline. "A bit pretentious, but it has good bones."
"It needs new paint," I said, running my hand along the edge of the desk.
The door opened behind us. A team of Vanguard corporate lawyers walked in, carrying thick stacks of legal binders.
"Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance," the lead attorney nodded respectfully. "The federal asset forfeiture is complete. Because Vanguard held the majority of the defaulted debt, the bankruptcy judge has formally transferred all shares, patents, and physical assets of Sterling Logistics over to your holding company."
I looked at the paperwork. For thirty years, my father had told me I was nothing. He had told me I had no killer instinct.
Now, his empire legally belonged to me.
"What are your orders, Ma'am?" the attorney asked me directly.
"Dissolve the Sterling brand name immediately," I instructed, my voice unwavering. "Rebrand the company as Apex Logistics. Reinstate the engineering team Chloe fired, and implement the V2 update of my routing algorithm. Oh, and one more thing."
I looked at the family portrait sitting on my father's desk. It was a picture of him, my mother, and Chloe. I wasn't even in it.

I picked up the silver frame and dropped it into the metal trash can.
"If anyone from my biological family ever attempts to enter this building, have security arrest them for trespassing."
