Chapter 6 - The Digital Eye

"Let her walk away," I whispered to Marcus, my hands shaking with a sudden, fierce adrenaline. "I have something she doesn't know about."
Marcus looked at me, confused.
I pulled out my phone and opened the smart home app. "Last week, we had that string of package thefts in the neighborhood. Remember? You installed the new 360-degree security cameras."
"Yeah, on the front porch," Marcus said.
"I had the technician install one on the back patio too, hidden under the eaves, just in case they tried to come through the backyard," I explained, my fingers flying across the screen, scrubbing back through the timeline to 12:45 PM.
Thomas the lawyer leaned over my shoulder.
There, in crystal clear 4K resolution, was the patio. The footage showed the guests mingling. Then, it zoomed in on the drink station.
We watched in absolute silence as the digital version of Eleanor walked up to the table, making sure no one was looking. She pulled a small, dark glass vial from her designer purse. She unscrewed the dropper, squeezed three heavy drops of clear liquid into a small plastic cup, and filled the rest with sweet tea.
A moment later, little Leo ran up to her. The camera captured audio perfectly. "Here you go, little one. Drink it all up," Eleanor's recorded voice cooed, handing him the tainted cup.

Marcus let out a ragged, heartbroken sob. His own mother.
I hit 'Save' and 'Backup to Cloud.' "Call the police, Thomas," I said, my voice hardening into steel. "Tell them to send a detective. Now."
