Chapter 10 - The Peaceful Horizon

Ten incredibly fast years passed in the blink of an eye.
Sofia was now an incredibly bright, fiercely independent ten-year-old girl who absolutely adored her little brother, Leo.
Our farmhouse had become the incredibly loud, chaotic center of our rapidly growing family's entirely joyous life.
It was Thanksgiving morning, and the massive kitchen was completely filled with the mouthwatering aroma of roasted turkey and fresh pies.
Alejandro was playfully wrestling with Leo on the living room rug, their loud, booming laughter completely echoing through the warm house.
I stood quietly at the kitchen island, meticulously chopping fresh vegetables for the stuffing.
Sofia skipped happily into the kitchen, entirely covered in flour from helping me roll out the pie crusts earlier.
"Mom, Dad says we get to pick out a real Christmas tree this weekend!" she announced excitedly, her dark eyes sparkling with absolute joy.
"That sounds like an incredibly wonderful plan," I smiled, gently wiping a smudge of white flour off her small nose.
I looked out the large kitchen window, watching the golden autumn leaves gently falling into the peaceful yard.
The absolute contrast between this beautiful, serene life and the horrifying nightmare we had escaped was entirely staggering.
Doña Victoria had recently passed away quietly in the prison hospital, a completely lonely end to a deeply bitter life.
Alejandro had received the brief official notification, read it entirely without emotion, and simply threw it into the fireplace.
We completely refused to let her dark ghost ruin our entirely beautiful existence.
Later that evening, as our entire family sat around the massive wooden dining table, Alejandro raised his glass for a heartfelt toast.
"To this beautiful family, to our completely safe home, and to the incredible strength that brought us all here," he said softly, his eyes locked deeply on mine.
"To us," I echoed happily, clinking my glass gently against his.

The horrific shadows of the past were completely, entirely gone.
We were finally, unconditionally, and absolutely free.
