Chapter 1 - The Performance

The heavy oak front door swung wide open, and two uniformed police officers rushed into our home with their hands resting cautiously on their duty belts.

Doña Victoria threw herself toward the taller officer, her face buried in her perfectly manicured hands as she unleashed a wail of absolute agony.

"Officers, thank God you are here to save me from this madness!" she sobbed, trembling so violently that her pearl necklace clicked against her collarbone.

"My daughter-in-law has completely lost her mind, and she just tried to attack me with a hot iron!"

She pointed a shaking, accusatory finger directly at me.

I sat frozen in the dining chair, my hands still protectively shielding my eight-month pregnant belly, entirely too stunned to speak.

The officers immediately shifted their gaze toward me, their expressions hardening with suspicion as they took in the chaotic scene.

"Ma'am, I need you to step away from the table and keep your hands where I can see them," the taller officer commanded, stepping toward me.

Before he could take another step, Alejandro smoothly stepped directly into his path, forming an impenetrable human shield between me and the police.

"Officer, you have the wrong suspect," Alejandro stated, his voice ringing with absolute, chilling authority.

"I am Captain Alejandro Vargas of the United States Army, and I am the one who called you here."

Doña Victoria gasped loudly, clutching her chest as if she had just been physically struck.

"Alejandro, please don't protect her anymore!" she cried out, tears streaming down her flawless, heavily powdered cheeks.

"She is deeply unwell, she belongs in a psychiatric ward, and she is a profound danger to my unborn grandchild!"

Alejandro did not even look at his mother.

He simply kept his steely gaze locked entirely on the responding officers.

"My mother is lying, and I have the physical evidence to prove it right here in this room."

He gestured calmly toward the dining table behind him.

"Feel the temperature of that iron, Officer, but be careful not to burn yourself."

The second officer cautiously walked over, hovering his hand a few inches above the metal plate of the iron.

"It is radiating extreme heat, sir," the officer confirmed, his brow furrowing in confusion.

"Now look at the cord," Alejandro instructed, his voice echoing loudly in the tense silence.

"It is plugged into the wall outlet right next to where my mother was standing, completely out of my wife's physical reach."

The officers exchanged a sudden, meaningful glance as the undeniable logic of the scene began to dismantle Victoria's hysterical lies.

"Furthermore, I want you to bag these documents as evidence of fraud and attempted extortion," Alejandro continued, pointing to the scattered papers.

"She forged military casualty notices to convince my pregnant wife I was dead, all to force her into signing away her parental rights."

Doña Victoria's fake tears stopped instantly, her face draining of all color.

"You are making a terrible mistake!" she shrieked as the taller officer suddenly reached for his handcuffs.

"You are under arrest for attempted aggravated assault and forgery," the officer declared, grabbing her pristine wrists.

The sound of the metal cuffs clicking shut around my mother-in-law's wrists was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard.
