Chapter 9 - The Arrests

The flashing red and blue lights of a dozen federal vehicles completely illuminated the neighborhood.
Neighbors were standing on their porches in their pajamas, watching in absolute shock as the raid unfolded.
I stood on the sidewalk, wrapped in a thick blanket Agent Miller had handed me, watching the scene play out.
The two cartel enforcers were dragged out of the house in heavy chains, their faces pushed down into the hoods of the waiting federal cruisers.
Then, two agents escorted Kevin out the front door.
He was absolutely ruined, his expensive facade completely shattered by the reality of federal prison.
As they walked him toward the transport van, a familiar, frantic voice pierced the cold night air.
"Kevin! Kevin, no!"
My mother came running down the street, having clearly parked her car blocks away to spy on the house.
She pushed past the police barricade, crying hysterically and reaching out for her golden boy.
"You can't take him! He didn't do anything wrong!" she screamed at the armed federal agents.
Agent Miller stepped in front of her, holding up a stern, commanding hand.
"Ma'am, step back immediately, or you will be arrested for interfering with a federal investigation," he warned her sharply.
My mother collapsed onto the wet asphalt, weeping uncontrollably as the van doors slammed shut, locking Kevin inside.
She slowly turned her tear-streaked face toward me, her eyes filled with a venomous, absolute hatred.
"You did this," she hissed, pointing a trembling finger at me from the ground.
"You ruined our family, Rachel."
I looked down at the woman who had spent my entire life making me feel completely invisible and inadequate.
"You ruined this family the day you decided his crimes were more important than my safety," I replied, my voice echoing with total finality.
"He is facing twenty years in federal prison, and you have absolutely nothing left."
I turned my back on her, pulling the blanket tighter around my shoulders, and walked back toward my house.
Agent Miller met me at the front door, offering a rare, genuine smile.
"You did incredibly well tonight, Ms. Sterling," the agent praised, extending a hand to shake mine.
"The audio recordings were flawless, and we have them dead to rights on extortion, wire fraud, and attempted murder."
"Thank you, Agent Miller," I said, shaking his hand firmly.
"Will I have to testify?" I asked, looking back at the chaotic street.
"With the mountain of evidence we just collected, they will all likely take plea deals to avoid a trial," he assured me.
The tactical teams finally packed up their gear, clearing out the heavy equipment and the flashing lights.

By 2:00 AM, the street was completely quiet once again.
I walked into my living room, locked the newly repaired door behind me, and finally breathed a sigh of true, unburdened relief.
