Chapter 5 - The Federal Sting

At 8:00 AM sharp, I was sitting in a sterile, brightly lit interrogation room at the FBI field office in downtown Denver.

Mr. Henderson sat beside me, looking immaculate in his tailored suit and holding a thick briefcase of evidence.

Across the metal table sat Special Agent Miller, a no-nonsense veteran investigator with sharp eyes and a tight jaw.

We played the recorded phone call with my mother, letting her callous words echo off the concrete walls.

Then, Mr. Henderson produced the shattered trust documents, the forged deed, and the terrifying voicemail from the syndicate.

Agent Miller leaned back in his chair, tapping a pen rhythmically against his notepad.

"Your brother didn't just borrow money from a street gang, Ms. Sterling," Agent Miller explained grimly.

"He borrowed half a million dollars from the Petrov crime family, a major money-laundering syndicate operating out of Chicago."

A cold shiver ran down my spine at the mention of organized crime.

"They don't care about your grandfather's trust, and they certainly don't care about the law," the agent continued.

"If Kevin doesn't pay them by tomorrow night, they will absolutely make good on their threats against you."

"So, what do we do?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly despite my best efforts to remain strong.

"We use you as bait," Agent Miller said bluntly, leaning forward over the table.

Mr. Henderson immediately protested, slamming his hand down on the metal surface.

"Absolutely not!" my lawyer shouted. "My client is a civilian, not a federal asset!"

"It is the only way to catch them in the act of extortion and arrest Kevin for wire fraud and conspiracy," Agent Miller countered.

He looked directly into my eyes, offering me a terrible but necessary choice.

"We wire your house with hidden cameras, audio recorders, and panic buttons," the agent proposed.

"You call Kevin, tell him you are willing to negotiate, and lure him to the house with his handlers."

"When they demand the money on tape, we raid the property and take them all down at once."

I thought about my grandfather, who had worked his entire life to build an honest legacy for our family.

I thought about the red paint dripping down my meticulously restored front door.

I knew that if I didn't end this right now, I would spend the rest of my life looking over my shoulder.

"Do it," I said, ignoring Mr. Henderson’s desperate objections.

"Wire the house."

By noon, a team of undercover technicians was swarming my property, disguised as a generic plumbing crew.

They installed microscopic lenses in my smoke detectors, audio bugs behind my electrical outlets, and a silent alarm under the kitchen island.

My home had officially become a federal trap.

Now, all I had to do was invite the monsters inside.
