I didn't dissolve the hotel completely. I rebranded it. The Sterling Plaza was stripped of its tacky gold-leaf fixtures and pretentious elitism. We modernized it, renamed it The Hayes Grand, and transformed the top two floors into a charitable foundation dedicated to providing legal and financial aid to victims of domestic abuse who lacked the resources I had.
I worked tirelessly. I poured my trauma into the foundation. I met women who had been trapped by men just like Julian—men who used financial abuse and social isolation to maintain control. We fought their legal battles. We funded their escapes.
