Chapter 5 - Stripped Bare

By sunrise the next morning, the world had shifted on its axis.
I sat in the penthouse suite of my father’s corporate headquarters, watching the morning news while holding an ice pack to my cheek.
The story had broken globally. Someone in the crowd—actually, multiple people—had uploaded the video of Julian hitting me. But my father’s PR machine had weaponized it. The narrative wasn't about a humiliated wife; it was about a violent, bankrupt fraud who had finally been unmasked.
The headline on the Financial Times read: STERLING EMPIRE COLLAPSES OVERNIGHT: HEIR ASSAULTS WIFE, LOSES $300M.
My attorney sat across from me, sliding a stack of papers across the glass table.
"The divorce filings are expedited," she explained. "Given the video evidence of the assault and the financial takeover, a judge will sign off on this before the end of the month. Furthermore, we have pressed criminal charges for domestic battery."
"Where are they?" I asked, my voice raspy.
"They spent the night in a Motel 6 near the airport," my father said, walking into the room with two cups of coffee. He handed me one. "Their credit cards were frozen at 11:00 PM last night. The banks seized their personal vehicles at dawn."
I looked down at my coffee. For seven years, I had endured Victor’s snide remarks. I had endured Julian’s escalating control, his gaslighting, his demand that I shrink myself to fit their narrative. I had played the obedient, grateful wife because I thought I loved him.
"It almost feels too easy," I murmured.
"It isn't over," my father said, sitting beside me. "Taking their money destroys their ego. But they are desperate animals now, Clara. They will try to claw their way back. We must break their spirit."
Right on cue, my burner phone—a clean line my security team had set up—vibrated on the table.

The caller ID showed an unregistered number. I put it on speaker.
"Clara," Eleanor’s voice crackled through the speaker, weeping hysterically. "Clara, please. You have to stop him."
