Chapter 9 - The Courtroom Drama

The courtroom was packed to capacity. The air was thick with tension as the media fought for a glimpse of the fallen golden boy of city politics.
I took the stand on the second day. Robert Sterling, Marcus’s high-priced lawyer, approached me like a shark circling a life raft.
"Mrs. Vance," Sterling began, his voice dripping with condescension. "You claim my client was abusive, yet medical records show no previous hospital visits. You claim he was a fraud, yet you happily spent his money for years. Isn't it true you only orchestrated this 'evidence' after you discovered he was planning to divorce you?"
I looked directly at the jury. "Mr. Sterling, if you look at Exhibit D—the metadata on the video file—you will see it was recorded automatically on a secure, encrypted loop. As for the finances, Exhibit F shows the exact IP addresses used to transfer the illicit funds. They match Marcus’s private terminal at City Hall. I didn't spend his money; I tracked it."
Sterling tried to interrupt, but I kept my voice steady, projecting across the quiet room.
"I stayed because leaving an abusive, powerful man is dangerous. I stayed to gather enough evidence so that when I finally spoke, he could never silence me, or anyone else, ever again."

The jury hung on my every word. Sterling looked at his notes, suddenly realizing he had walked into a trap. He had tried to break a frightened housewife, but he had engaged a trained federal agent.
Marcus sat at the defense table, his head in his hands. He knew it was over.
