Chapter 1 - The Breakfast Invitee
The digital clock on the microwave flipped to 6:58 AM. I poured exactly two cups of dark roast coffee. The heavy oak front door didn't slam this time; it opened with a polite, measured knock.
District Attorney Elias Thorne stepped into my foyer. He was a man who practically bled ambition, yet he looked unusually pale this morning. I didn't offer him a seat right away. I simply turned my tablet toward him on the marble kitchen island and pressed play.
Thorne watched the footage in absolute silence. The crack of Marcus’s hand against my jaw echoed from the small speakers, followed by my husband's damning voice: Look what you forced me to do.
"Assault," Thorne murmured, adjusting his glasses. "It's damning, Nora, but for a man of his stature, his lawyers will spin it. They'll claim it was a one-time altercation. A crime of passion."
I took a slow sip of my coffee. "Keep watching, Elias."
The screen split. Beside the video of the assault, a cascade of spreadsheets began to scroll. Offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. Shell companies registered in Delaware. A systematic funneling of campaign funds into a private account Marcus used to buy his influence, his silence, and the judge sitting on Thorne's biggest upcoming case.
Thorne’s jaw tightened. "Where did you get this?"
"I didn't just organize his charity galas, Elias. I balanced his books. For four years, he thought I was his pretty little secretary. He forgot I spent a decade tracking dirty money for the Bureau." I slid a thick, bound dossier across the counter. "The assault is the hook. The fraud is the anchor. Today, you don't just get an indictment. You get the mayor's office, the police commissioner, and Marcus Vance. All wrapped in a neat, undeniable bow. But we do it my way."
