Chapter 8 - The Sentencing

The jury deliberated for less than four hours.
Guilty on all charges. Aggravated domestic assault, identity theft, and multiple counts of federal wire fraud.
During the sentencing hearing, the judge didn't hold back. He looked down at David, who was shaking uncontrollably, sobbing into his hands.
“Mr. Vance,” the judge’s voice echoed through the silent courtroom. “You are a predator. You abused the trust of your clients, and you abused the sanctity of your marriage. You used manipulation, violence, and intimidation to control the victim in this case. You are a danger to society and a disgrace.”
The gavel slammed down.
“I sentence you to a combined total of twelve years in federal prison, without the possibility of parole, followed by five years of supervised release. You are ordered to pay full restitution to your former firm, and you are permanently barred from contacting Sarah Vance.”

As the bailiffs hauled David away, he didn't look at me. He kept his head down, a broken, defeated shell of a man.
I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for five years. The heavy, invisible chain around my neck snapped. I was free.
