Chapter 7 - The Trial of David Vance

The criminal trial for the domestic assault and the federal fraud charges were combined into a brutal, three-week spectacle. The prosecution was merciless.

David’s defense attorney tried to paint him as a stressed, overworked executive who made a few poor financial choices and had a "minor physical altercation" with his wife. But the evidence was insurmountable.

I took the stand on the second day. The courtroom was packed, but I only focused on Dad, who sat in the front row, his posture immaculate, radiating quiet strength.

I testified about the isolation, the gaslighting, and the physical abuse. I described the moment he shoved me into the bookcase. Then, the prosecutor played the 911 dispatch audio of the state troopers arriving, and showed the high-definition photos of the bruising on my spine and shoulder.

But the final nail in the coffin was the financial testimony. Forensic accountants laid out a meticulously documented paper trail showing how David had stolen from his clients, forged my signature, and attempted to hide the money.

When David finally took the stand in his own defense, he cracked under cross-examination. His narcissism couldn't handle being challenged. When the prosecutor pressed him on the forged signatures, David lost his temper on the stand.

“She was my wife! What’s hers is mine!” David screamed, his face turning purple. “She was too stupid to understand finances anyway! I was securing our future!”

The jury recoiled in visible disgust. Even his own lawyer face-palmed. He had just confessed to financial control and financial abuse on the public record.
