Chapter 15 - The Process Server

At 10:30 AM on Monday morning, Julian was sitting in the glass-walled primary conference room of his corporate headquarters downtown, leading a quarterly marketing strategy presentation for fifteen senior executives, vice presidents, and regional directors. He was dressed in his sharpest suit, desperately attempting to project an image of professional control and executive competence despite the chaotic collapse of his personal life.

The heavy double glass doors of the conference room swung open without a knock.

A tall, broad-shouldered man wearing a clean gray suit stepped into the room, carrying a thick, blue-backed legal document stamped with the seal of the Travis County District Court. He bypassed the junior associates at the door and walked directly down the length of the mahogany table toward Julian, who had frozen mid-sentence with his presentation clicker in his hand.

"Excuse me, sir, this is a closed executive session," Julian snapped, flushing red as his vice presidents frowned at the intrusion. "You cannot enter this room."

The man didn't slow down. He reached the head of the table, looked Julian dead in the eye, and asked in a clear, resonant voice that carried to every corner of the silent room: "Julian Vance?"

"Yes? What is this about?" Julian stammered, stepping backward against the presentation screen.

"You are hereby served," the process server announced, slapping the thirty-page divorce petition and asset-seizure injunction directly onto the mahogany conference table in front of Julian’s laptop.
