Chapter 11 - The Arrest at the Startup

Monday morning arrived with the clinical, unyielding precision of a surgical strike. Leo Vance had apparently spent his weekend boasting to his friends that he had "put his arrogant sister-in-law in her place," completely unaware that high-definition security cameras had documented every single second of his felony vandalism.
At 10:15 AM, Leo was sitting in the open-plan sales bullpen of Apex Tech Solutions, a fast-growing software startup in downtown Austin where he worked as a junior business development associate. He was wearing his best suit, leaning back in his ergonomic chair, loudly bragging to his cubicle neighbors about his weekend exploits while sipping an iced matcha latte.
The glass double doors of the Apex Tech reception lobby slid open, and two uniformed Austin Police Department officers marched in, accompanied by the company’s Director of Human Resources and campus security.
The busy, sixty-person sales floor fell into a dead, breathless silence as the officers bypassed the reception desk and walked directly down the center aisle of the cubicles toward Leo’s desk.
"Leo Vance?" the lead officer asked in a booming voice that carried across the entire office floor.
Leo froze, his matcha latte stopping halfway to his mouth. The color drained from his face as he looked at the police badges and the hands resting on utility belts. "Yeah? What’s going on? Is there a problem with my car?"
"You are under arrest for Class State Felony Criminal Mischief and Intentional Destruction of Property," the officer announced clearly, reaching to his belt and pulling out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. "Stand up, turn around, and place your hands behind your back."
"What?! You can't arrest me here!" Leo shrieked, jumping to his feet and backing away toward the window as sixty of his coworkers, supervisors, and regional managers stood up to watch the spectacle. "This is a workplace! My brother is Julian Vance! That was my sister-in-law's car! It was a family dispute!"
"It was a felony vandalism of a motor vehicle exceeding two thousand dollars in property damage, captured on 4K digital video," the officer replied coldly, closing the distance, grabbing Leo by his wrists, and spinning him roughly against his cubicle desk to apply the cuffs with a sharp, echoing clink.
"You're making a mistake! Call my brother! Call Julian right now!" Leo screamed, struggling against the restraints as tears of absolute, panicked humiliation streamed down his face in front of his entire professional network.

The HR Director stepped forward, holding a small cardboard box containing Leo’s desk items. "Mr. Vance, under company policy, an active felony arrest on corporate premises constitutes grounds for immediate, termination for cause. Your employment with Apex Tech Solutions is terminated effective immediately. Please do not return to this building."
They paraded Leo Vance out of the office floor in handcuffs, his expensive loafers dragging on the carpet, his screams echoing down the elevator shaft as his coworkers frantically texted and recorded the arrest on their phones. The arrogant junior executive who had sneered at me on the sidewalk a week ago was now an unemployed, convicted felon sitting in the back of a police cruiser.
