Chapter 8 - Building a New Life

With Richard securely behind bars, the storm finally passed.

The following months were a time of deep healing and incredible transformation. I used the money from my half of the marital assets to go back to school. I had always wanted to be a pediatric nurse, a dream Richard had belittled because it "didn't pay enough to match his lifestyle."

Now, having spent weeks in the NICU watching the incredible nurses save Lily, I knew exactly what my purpose was.

My relationship with the Sterlings blossomed into something beautiful and unprecedented. I didn't live in the east wing forever—I bought a cozy, beautiful home just ten minutes down the road from their estate.

But I was at the Sterling house almost every day.

Arthur and Victoria never made me feel like an outsider. To them, I was family. We celebrated holidays together. We took Lily to the park together.

One afternoon in late autumn, I was sitting in the Sterlings' backyard, watching the leaves fall. Lily was now eight months old, crawling across the picnic blanket, babbling happily.

Victoria sat beside me, sipping hot cider.

"She has your laugh, you know," Victoria said, smiling as Lily let out a loud, joyous squeal.

"She doesn't share my DNA, Victoria," I chuckled gently.

"DNA doesn't dictate a soul, Emma," Arthur said, walking up behind us and wrapping a warm blanket around his wife's shoulders. "You loved her first. You fought for her first. That leaves an imprint on a child."

I looked down at Lily, who had managed to pull herself up onto her chubby little legs, leaning heavily against my knee. She looked up at me with wide, bright eyes.

"Mama Em," she babbled softly.

My heart swelled until I thought it might burst.
