Chapter 10 - The First Birthday

Lily’s first birthday party was nothing short of magical.

Arthur had transformed the estate gardens into a fairy-tale wonderland. There were twinkling lights, a massive pastel cake, and gentle acoustic music playing in the background.

Friends and family filled the yard. Marcus was there, awkwardly holding a giant stuffed giraffe. Even the NICU nurses who had saved Lily's life had been invited, and I spent an hour catching up with them, sharing my excitement about my upcoming nursing exams.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the garden, it was time for the cake.

Victoria carried Lily, who was wearing a tiny floral dress and a miniature flower crown, over to the main table. Arthur lit the single candle.

"Before we blow this out," Arthur said, raising a glass of champagne. The crowd quieted down.

"A little over a year ago, my wife and I thought our dream of having a family was gone," Arthur spoke, his voice carrying a deep, resonant emotion. "We were lost. But by an incredible twist of fate, and through the unmatched courage of an extraordinary woman, our daughter found her way to us."

He turned and looked directly at me.

"Emma, you went through hell. You faced betrayal that would have broken most people. But you didn't break. You protected our little girl. You are the strongest person I know. So, today, we don't just celebrate Lily's birth. We celebrate you. Because without you, there is no us."

The crowd erupted into applause. Victoria wiped away a tear, and Lily clapped her tiny hands, completely oblivious to the weight of the moment, just happy to hear the noise.

I stepped forward, joining Arthur and Victoria at the table.

"Together?" Victoria asked, gesturing to the candle.

"Together," I nodded.

The three of us leaned in and blew out the candle.

I looked around the beautiful garden, surrounded by people who loved me, holding the hand of the daughter I had saved, standing beside the family I had gained.

Somewhere in a cold federal cell, Richard was sleeping alone, having traded all of this away because he didn't want to lose a few hours of rest for a work pitch.

He thought he was leaving me with nothing.

He had no idea he was giving me everything.
