Chapter 10 - The Vanguard Legacy

Six months later.
The ashes of the Sterling estate had long since been cleared away. The Syndicate was dismantled, fractured into a thousand pieces after Arthur’s public confession led to a global sweep of arrests. Arthur himself was sitting in a maximum-security black site, facing a lifetime of solitary confinement.
I stood on the balcony of the newly rebuilt Vanguard estate in New York, looking out over the three thousand acres of pristine forest. The scars on my back from Julian’s riding crop had faded to faint white lines, but they were a permanent reminder of the fire I had walked through to get here.
The door to the balcony opened, and my father walked out. He leaned heavily on his walking stick, still recovering from the gunshot wound, but the haunted, vengeful look that had plagued him for twenty years was finally gone.
He handed me a thick leather portfolio.
“The board voted unanimously this morning,” my father said, his voice thick with pride. “I’m stepping down, Evie. The Vanguard Empire is officially yours to command as CEO.”
I took the portfolio, feeling the immense weight of the legacy in my hands. I wasn't the weak, terrified wife cowering in Julian’s shadow anymore. I was the architect of his destruction. I had exposed a global conspiracy, avenged my mother’s murder, and saved my family’s empire.
“Thank you, Papa,” I said softly, looking out at the horizon.

My father rested a warm hand on my shoulder. “You’re a Vanguard, Evelyn. You didn't just survive the storm. You became it.”
I smiled, unclasping the emerald brooch from my lapel. I didn't need it anymore. I tossed it over the balcony, watching it disappear into the deep, dark woods below. The past was finally buried. And the future belonged entirely to me.
