Chapter 1 - The Vanguard Arrival

The rhythmic, deafening thud of helicopter blades violently shook the crystal chandeliers of the Sterling manor.

Julian’s face, moments ago twisted into a mask of sadistic arrogance, slackened into pale, unadulterated terror. He dropped the leather riding crop. It hit the imported marble floor with a hollow clatter that echoed through the grand foyer.

Beside him, his mistress, a twenty-something aspiring model named Chloe, spilled her glass of Pinot Noir down the front of her silk dress. She wasn’t looking at the helicopters descending on the manicured lawns. She was staring at my phone screen, where the caller ID was clearly visible.

Marcus Vanguard.

“Vanguard?” Chloe whispered, her voice trembling so violently it cracked. “Julian… you said her maiden name was Smith. You said she was a nobody!”

Julian couldn't speak. He was too busy staring at his vibrating smartwatch. The notifications were coming in a relentless, digital avalanche.

ALERT: Offshore Account #8844 Frozen. ALERT: Shareholder Emergency Vote - PASSED. ALERT: SEC Warrant Issued.

“What did you do?” Julian breathed, taking a stumbling step toward me.

I didn't cower. The pain radiating across my back from the fifty strikes was agonizing, but the adrenaline masking it was absolute euphoria. I stood up, straightening my ruined silk blouse, and looked down at him.

“I did exactly what I promised to do, Julian,” I said, my voice eerily calm. “I played the devoted, terrified wife. And while you were busy beating me to inflate your pathetic ego, I systematically dismantled your entire empire.”

The heavy oak front doors didn't just open; they were breached. A dozen men in tactical gear swarmed the foyer, their laser sights painting Julian and Chloe’s chests.

Behind them walked my father.

Marcus Vanguard was a man who owned senators, dictated global markets, and possessed a reputation so ruthless that cartels paid him for protection. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit, grasping a silver-handled walking stick. He took one look at the blood seeping through my blouse, and the temperature in the room plummeted to absolute zero.

“Papa,” I said softly.

My father’s eyes locked onto Julian. “You have exactly three seconds to get on your knees, boy, before my men take your legs at the kneecaps.”

Julian dropped to his knees instantly, sobbing. Chloe shrieked, pressing herself against the far wall.

“Mr. Vanguard, please! I didn't know!” Julian begged, crawling forward. “I swear to God, she lied to me! If I knew who she was—”

“If you knew who she was, you would have been too terrified to even look in her direction,” my father interrupted smoothly. He gestured to his head of security. “Take him to the black site. Leave the girl. She’s nothing.”

As they dragged a screaming Julian out of his own home, my father gently draped his cashmere overcoat around my shoulders. “You did well, Evelyn. But it’s time to go home.”
