Chapter 9 - The Final Signature

Six months after the incident at the airport, the divorce was finalized by a judge.
Because of the ironclad prenup and the evidence of massive financial fraud David had committed to hide money for his mistress, he walked away with absolute zero. In fact, he walked away in the negative. He owed me $120,000, and he owed the IRS nearly a quarter of a million in unpaid taxes that I had previously shielded him from.
We stood on the steps of the courthouse. The autumn wind was crisp and cool.
David looked at me. His eyes were hollow.
"You ruined me, Victoria," he whispered, his voice broken. "You took everything. My career, my family, my reputation. Are you happy now?"
I stopped and looked at the man I had once loved. I thought about the Thanksgiving dinners. The late nights waiting up for him. The quiet sacrifices I made to keep his ego inflated.
"I didn't ruin you, David," I said calmly. "I just stopped saving you. The man you are right now? This is who you always were without me."
He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out.

"Enjoy the rest of your life," I said.
I turned my back on him, walked down the marble steps, and climbed into the back of my waiting town car. I didn't look back in the rearview mirror.
