Chapter 8 - A Sister’s Betrayal
Chloe, David’s sister, was always the loudest voice in the room. She loved mocking my clothes, my quiet demeanor, and my lack of "ambition."
When the reality of their poverty set in, Chloe did what rats do on a sinking ship: she turned on her own family.
She called me from a burner phone.
"Victoria," she pleaded, her voice trembling. "Please. David is losing his mind. Mom is having a breakdown in this awful motel. I had nothing to do with Madison! I didn't want him to cheat on you!"
"You were standing at the airport holding a boarding pass, Chloe," I reminded her.
"He bought the tickets! I was just going along with it! Please, Victoria, I can't live like this. If you just give me a little bit of money, I'll testify against him in court. I'll tell the judge whatever you want!"
I recorded the call. Of course I did.
I didn't give her a dime. Instead, I sent the audio file directly to David’s phone.

The next morning, the police were called to the motel for a domestic disturbance. David and Chloe had gotten into a screaming, physical altercation in the parking lot. The image of the great David Sterling being handcuffed over a screaming match with his sister made the front page of the local paper.
The family that had so eagerly abandoned me was now eating itself alive.
