Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Slaughter

The probate hearing was a mere formality, but it was a massacre nonetheless.

Richard and Eleanor sat at the defense table representing themselves. They looked small, fragile, and utterly defeated.

Marcus Thorne stood beside me, a mountain of legal briefs stacked on our table.

The judge, a no-nonsense woman with sharp eyes, looked down at Richard. "Mr. Sterling, you are contesting the validity of your son's trust and the transfer of the Oak Creek estate. On what grounds?"

"She manipulated him, Your Honor," Richard mumbled weakly. "He was sick. She brainwashed him."

Marcus stood up. "Your Honor, we submit Exhibit A through F. Sworn affidavits from three board-certified neurologists confirming David Sterling's absolute mental clarity. We also submit Exhibit G, financial records proving Richard Sterling embezzled four million dollars from his clients, a crime my client’s late husband covered up by purchasing the estate to pay restitution."

The judge’s eyes widened. She flipped through the files.

"Furthermore," Marcus continued, his voice echoing in the silent courtroom, "we are filing for a permanent restraining order against Richard and Eleanor Sterling, citing documented emotional abuse and physical endangerment of six minors when they forced them into a freezing storm."

The judge looked at Richard with absolute disgust.

"Mr. Sterling, you are lucky Mrs. Sterling is not handing these embezzlement files over to the District Attorney today," the judge said sharply. "I am dismissing your contest with prejudice. The trust stands. The estate belongs to Clara Sterling and her children. And I am granting the permanent restraining orders. If you come within five hundred feet of this family, you will go to jail."

The gavel banged. It sounded like a cannon.

It was over.
