Chapter 5 - The Legal Shark

I sat in Marcus Thorne’s towering glass office in downtown Chicago. He was a silver-haired, impeccably dressed shark of a man, and looking at the files spread across his mahogany desk, I understood why David had trusted him.
"They are currently sitting in a cheap motel by the interstate," Marcus noted, tapping his pen. "The luxury hotel kicked them out when the cards bounced. Richard tried to access the corporate accounts, only to find you are now the majority shareholder of his former firm."
I sipped my coffee, feeling a profound sense of calm. "What is their next move?"
"Desperation," Marcus said bluntly. "Richard has hired a bargain-bin attorney to file an emergency injunction, claiming you manipulated a dying man into signing over the estate. He's going to try and drag your name through the mud."
"Can he win?"
Marcus laughed. It was a cold, terrifying sound. "Clara, I drafted these documents myself. David submitted to three separate psychiatric evaluations to prove he was of sound mind when he transferred the assets. The paperwork is bulletproof."
He leaned forward, his eyes gleaming. "But we aren't just going to play defense. We are going to destroy him. Richard has a secret offshore account he hid from the IRS. It holds about two hundred thousand dollars—his absolute last lifeline. We are going to freeze it."
"How?"
"As the executor of David's estate, you are legally calling in the debts Richard owed his son. Which amount to roughly six million dollars," Marcus smiled. "He is financially bankrupt, morally bankrupt, and by Friday, he will be legally bankrupt."

I looked out the window at the sprawling city. For years, I had made myself small to keep the peace. I had let them treat me like dirt.
"Do it," I commanded. "Take every last cent."
