Chapter 14 - A New Chapter
Two years after the courtroom gavel fell on the Vance dynasty, Juliana introduced me to someone new at our traditional Sunday family dinner—a dinner that had long since been restored to a place of joy, laughter, and delicious food in my Buckhead home.
His name was David Miller, a dedicated structural engineer who had consulted on Juliana’s civic center project. He was a quiet, kind-hearted man who treated Juliana with profound, unwavering respect, listening intently to her ideas and supporting her leadership with genuine admiration.
As I watched them together in my kitchen, preparing a fresh garlic rosemary lamb roast while laughing over a spilled drop of olive oil on the counter, I noticed something that brought a quiet tear of gratitude to my eye.
When the oil spilled, Juliana didn't flinch. She didn't freeze in terror, and she didn't instinctively look at David’s face to gauge his temper. She simply grabbed a paper towel, wiped it up with a laugh, and David playfully tossed a clean towel over her shoulder before checking the temperature of the oven.
The hyper-vigilance was gone. The scars of the past had faded into the background, replaced by the secure, healthy rhythm of a woman who knew she was entirely safe, deeply loved, and completely in control of her own destiny.
After dinner, while David was clearing the dishes from the dining room table, Juliana walked out onto the back patio where I was sitting with a glass of red wine, watching the sunset cast golden light across my garden.
"He’s a good man, Juliana," I said softly as she sat down in the wicker chair beside me.

"He really is, Mom," Juliana smiled, resting her head against my shoulder. "For a long time, I didn't know if I would ever be able to trust anyone enough to let them into my life again. But David doesn't want to control me—he just wants to share the journey."
"That is what real partnership looks like, honey," I said, kissing the top of her forehead. "It’s built on mutual respect, not fear."
