Chapter 13 - The Veteran Network

Over the next eight months, Juliana’s vision for the North Georgia retreat became a reality. Working alongside Samuel Vance and a construction crew staffed almost entirely by military veterans transitioning back into civilian life, she transformed the rustic cabin acreage into a sprawling, state-of-the-art sanctuary named The Anchor Point.
The facility featured a main timber-framed lodge with panoramic mountain views, specialized physical therapy and wellness pavilions, and private guest cottages designed with universal accessibility standards. It was built to serve as a retreat for combat veterans dealing with PTSD, as well as a secure tactical training ground for military legal personnel studying complex criminal investigations.
On the opening weekend of the retreat, over fifty retired and active-duty Navy JAG officers, Force Recon specialists, and federal investigators gathered on the main lodge terrace for a traditional naval dining-in celebration.
I sat at the head table between Samuel and Juliana, surrounded by men and women who had dedicated their lives to defending the rule of law across the globe. The smell of roasted lamb and cedar wood smoke filled the crisp mountain air, echoing the memories of my late husband Robert in the most honorable way possible.
Samuel stood up, tapping his spoon against a crystal glass to call the assembly to attention. The rowdy laughter of veteran officers quieted into respectful silence as he raised his glass of bourbon.
"To Commander Margaret Vance," Samuel toasted, his voice echoing across the terrace. "A woman who proved to all of us that our oath to protect and defend doesn't end when we hang up the uniform. When evil found its way to her family's doorstep, she didn't just hold the line—she launched a counter-offensive that redefined what it means to protect our own."
The entire assembly rose to their feet in unison, raising their glasses with a resounding naval cheer: "Hear, hear!"

I stood up, feeling a deep, overwhelming wave of emotion swell in my chest as I looked out at the faces of my comrades, and then down at my daughter smiling beside me.
"Thank you, Samuel," I said, my voice strong and clear. "But the true hero of this story isn't the lawyer who built the case. It’s the survivor who had the courage to walk out of the darkness and stand as a witness for the truth. To Juliana—the strongest architect I know."
