Chapter 3 - The Empty Cage

For the next six hours, I sat in the suffocating silence of my daughter’s living room. The forensics team had swept the house, packed up their kits, and vanished. Two undercover detectives were parked in an unmarked sedan down the street. Two more were waiting with me, hidden in the shadows of the dining room.
My phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was a text from Mark.
Hey Helen! Just checking in. Spoke to the retreat director today. Sarah is doing great, really finding her center. She says she loves you. Let's grab coffee next week!
The sheer, sociopathic audacity of the message made my stomach churn. He was typing those words while fully believing his wife was chained to a concrete floor, starving in her own filth. I typed back a response, keeping my tone perfectly breezy.
That's wonderful news, Mark. Thank you for taking such good care of her. See you next week.
At 6:15 PM, the distinct hum of Mark’s Audi pulled into the driveway. The heavy garage door rumbled open, and then shut.
The lock clicked. Mark strolled through the mudroom, whistling a cheerful, upbeat tune. He tossed his keys onto the counter, loosened his expensive silk tie, and grabbed a bottle of sparkling water from the fridge. He looked completely relaxed. A man who thought he had committed the perfect crime.
He walked past the living room without looking in my direction and opened the basement door. He flipped the light switch, his heavy footsteps descending the wooden stairs.
"Wakey wakey, Sarah," Mark called out, his voice dripping with sadistic mock-sweetness. "Did you miss me?"
I stood up from the armchair, unholstering the Glock 19 I had carried for thirty years. I walked to the top of the basement stairs and looked down.
Mark was standing in the center of the cellar, staring at the empty, broken chain and the missing camping cot. The bottle of water slipped from his hand, shattering on the concrete.

"Looking for someone, Mark?" I asked.
He spun around, the color instantly draining from his perfectly tanned face.
