Chapter 1 - The Badge Never Retires

The 911 dispatcher picked up on the second ring. Before she could even ask for my emergency, I slipped right back into the cadence I had used for three decades.

"This is retired Detective Helen Rossi, Badge number 4409. I need a medical transport and three black-and-whites at 421 Elmwood Drive. Code 3. I have a 32-year-old female victim, unlawful imprisonment, severe malnutrition, and suspected poisoning. And listen to me very carefully: do not put this over the main scanner. Use the encrypted tactical channel. The suspect is the husband, and he does not know we are here."

"Copy that, Detective Rossi," the dispatcher said, her voice tightening with professional urgency. "Units are en route."

I pocketed my phone and turned back to my daughter. Sarah was shivering uncontrollably, her eyes wide and unfocused in the dim cellar light. I didn't try to break the iron chain—without bolt cutters, I’d only injure her fragile wrist further. Instead, I stripped off my heavy wool coat and wrapped it tightly around her trembling shoulders.

"You're safe now, baby," I whispered, brushing the matted hair from her forehead. "Mama's got you."

"He said... he said you gave up," Sarah rasped, a tear cutting a clean trail through the grime on her cheek. "He said you believed he sent me to the ashram."

"He's a narcissist with a God complex, Sarah. He underestimated both of us."

Within four minutes, the heavy thud of combat boots echoed on the hardwood floor above. Two uniformed officers, flanked by a pair of EMTs, descended the wooden stairs. The lead officer, a young guy named Miller who I had trained during his rookie year, froze when he saw the heavy iron chain and the camping cot.

"Jesus Christ, Helen," Miller breathed out, his hand instinctively dropping to his service weapon. "Is this..."

"My daughter," I said, my voice cold as ice. "Get the bolt cutters from your cruiser, Miller. And have someone bag those pill bottles on the table. Chain of custody starts right now. Mark is going to pay for every second she spent in this dark."
