Chapter 8 - The Trial

The criminal trial began six months later. The courtroom was packed with reporters, gawkers, and former wedding guests. Chloe sat at the defense table, looking gaunt and terrified. The arrogance had been completely scrubbed from her face, replaced by the stark realization that her father’s money couldn't buy her way out of high-definition video evidence.

The prosecution’s case was devastating. Dr. Thorne testified about my acute injuries and the history of bone fractures, painting a grim picture of lifelong abuse. Liam took the stand, his voice steady as he recounted finding the video and realizing his fiancé was a sociopath.

But the most crushing moment was when they played the video for the jury.

The courtroom went dead silent as the footage showed Chloe trapping me, the malicious smirk on her face, the violent shove, and then, her throwing her head back and laughing as I lay bleeding on the stones below.

Chloe’s defense attorney tried to argue it was a tragic accident, a joke gone wrong, but nobody was buying it. The jury’s faces were masks of pure disgust.

I was called to the stand on the final day. I looked directly at Chloe, then at my mother, who was sitting in the gallery, weeping into a tissue.

"I spent my entire life trying to be small so they could be big," I told the jury, my voice ringing clear and strong through the microphone. "I endured the jokes, the cruelty, and the violence because I believed family was supposed to protect you. I know now that some families are just traps. Chloe didn't push me as a joke. She pushed me because she wanted to break me. But she failed."
