Chapter 4 - The Cabin’s Secret

Once I was medically cleared to leave the hospital, I didn't go back to my tiny apartment. I knew my mother would be waiting there. Instead, I drove three hours north to the lakeside cabin my grandfather had left me.

It was a beautiful, rustic A-frame nestled in the pine trees. Chloe had thrown a legendary tantrum when the will was read. She wanted it as a summer party house. I just wanted it because it was the only place I ever felt safe as a child.

I settled into the worn leather armchair in the living room, wincing at the pain in my ribs. As I reached for a blanket in the old cedar chest beside the fireplace, my fingers brushed against a false bottom.

Curiosity overrode my pain. I pried the thin wooden panel up. Inside was a stack of leather-bound journals and a sealed envelope with my name on it.

With shaking hands, I opened the letter.

My dearest Clara, If you are reading this, I am gone. I left you this cabin because it is the only asset I have that your mother and uncle cannot touch. I failed you, Clara. I knew what they were doing to you. I knew Chloe was a deeply disturbed child, and I knew your mother was covering up the injuries to protect the family's "perfect" image. I documented everything. Every hospital visit, every lie they told, every bruise they tried to hide. It is all in these journals. I was too cowardly to stand up to my own children while I was alive. Please, use this to protect yourself. Love, Grandpa.

I opened the first journal. It dated back twenty years. It was a meticulous, heartbreaking log of a family’s systematic abuse and complicity.

I wasn't just a victim anymore. I was armed.
