Chapter 7 - The Ambush

I broke every speed limit on the highway racing back to the city.

By the time I reached my father’s large suburban home, it was pitch black outside.

Daniel’s luxury sedan was parked in the circular driveway, right next to Vance’s sports car.

I parked my car out of sight on the street and crept across the front lawn.

The front door was slightly ajar, which made my stomach twist in knots.

I pushed the door open silently and stepped into the grand foyer.

The house was completely silent, but the lights in the study were glowing brightly.

I tiptoed down the hallway, pressing my back against the wall.

I peeked around the corner into the study.

Dad was slumped in his leather armchair, clutching his chest in obvious pain.

Daniel paced back and forth, waving a stack of legal documents.

Vance stood by the fireplace, looking incredibly nervous.

“Just sign the power of attorney, Dad,” Daniel demanded aggressively.

“If you sign it, I can unfreeze the accounts, fix this mess, and we can all move on.”

Dad gasped for air, his face pale and covered in sweat.

“You are having a heart attack,” Dad wheezed.

“Call an ambulance, Daniel, please.”

Daniel completely ignored our father’s plea for help.

“Not until you sign the paper,” Daniel said coldly, tossing a pen onto Dad’s lap.

Vance took a step forward, looking horrified.

“Daniel, this is going too far,” the attorney stammered.

“If he dies, we are looking at manslaughter.”

“Shut up, Vance!” Daniel snapped.

I could not hide in the shadows any longer.

I stepped into the doorway, holding my phone high in the air.

“The police are already on their way, Daniel,” I lied smoothly, trying to keep my voice steady.

Daniel spun around, his face contorting with absolute rage.

“You stupid little girl,” Daniel spat, walking toward me.

“I have everything recorded, Vance,” I said, looking right at the attorney.

“I know about the fake vendor contracts, and I know you helped him cover up a twenty-year-old arson.”

Vance’s face drained of all color.

Daniel lunged at me, but I was ready.
