Chapter 6 - The Attorney's Betrayal

I sat in my car outside the Briarwood gates, processing Samuel’s confession.

Mom had used the blackmail as a way to force Daniel to incriminate himself.

She knew that if he used corporate funds, it would become a federal crime.

She left the flash drive for me so I could finally pull the trigger and destroy him legally.

But there was one piece of the puzzle that still did not fit.

How had Daniel managed to hide hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen funds from our accountants for five years?

I pulled out the printed documents and looked closely at the wire transfer receipts.

Every single fraudulent transfer had been signed off by the legal department.

Specifically, they were approved by our company attorney, Mr. Vance.

Vance was not just a bystander; he was a co-conspirator.

He had been drafting fake vendor contracts to cover up Daniel’s theft.

I immediately called my father.

“Dad, you cannot trust Vance,” I warned him as soon as he answered.

“Vance has been helping Daniel launder the money this whole time.”

“I know, Claire,” Dad replied, his voice sounding strangely strained.

“Dad? Are you okay?” I asked, gripping the steering wheel.

“Claire, listen to me very carefully,” Dad said, breathing heavily.

“Do not go back to your apartment.”

“Vance and Daniel are here at the main house.”

“They are trying to force me to sign over my remaining shares of the company.”

I heard a loud crash through the phone, followed by Daniel’s angry shouting.

“Sign the paper, old man!” Daniel yelled in the background.

“Dad!” I screamed into the receiver.

The line suddenly went dead.

Panic surged through my veins like ice water.

Daniel was completely out of control, and he was cornering our father.

I started the engine and slammed my foot on the gas pedal.

I had to get back to the city before my brother did something unthinkable.
