Chapter 2 - The Midnight Escape

Steven did not call the police.
Instead, he grabbed his coat and stormed out of the house without another word.
Sarah hesitated for a moment before running out after him, leaving the three of us alone.
The front door slammed shut, echoing loudly through the old farmhouse.
I sat back down slowly, feeling as though the ground had vanished beneath my feet.
Mom was crying silently, her shoulders shaking with the weight of four decades of secrets.
I looked at Julia, the woman who shared my face and my eyes.
“Are you my mother?” I asked, needing to hear the words out loud.
Julia looked down at her hands, taking a deep, shuddering breath.
“Yes,” she finally answered, looking back up at me with tears in her eyes.
“I am your biological mother.”
The confirmation felt like a physical blow to my chest.
“And Dad?” I choked out.
“Was he actually my father?”
Mom let out a broken sob, refusing to look up from the table.
Julia shook her head slowly, her expression hardening.
“No, he wasn’t.”
“Your father was a man named Richard Vance.”
I had never heard that name in my entire life.
“Who is Richard Vance?” I asked.
“He was the head of Vanguard Development forty years ago,” Julia explained.
“The same company Steven is trying to sell this land to now.”
A chill ran down my spine at the mention of the corrupt development firm.
“Richard was a monster,” Julia continued, her voice trembling slightly.
“I was nineteen, naive, and completely swept up in his charm.”
“When I got pregnant, his charm turned into violent rage.”
“He was married, running for a local political office, and could not afford a scandal.”
Julia reached across the table and took my hand.
Her skin was warm, and her touch felt strangely familiar.
“He told me that if I didn’t get rid of the baby, he would get rid of both of us.”
I gasped, squeezing her hand tightly.
“I was terrified, so I went to my sister for help,” Julia said, looking at Mom.
Mom finally looked up, wiping her tear-stained cheeks.
“I was completely heartbroken because I had just lost a baby of my own,” Mom whispered.
“My husband told me he would handle it.”
“He told me he would protect Julia and the baby.”
Julia laughed bitterly.
“He protected himself, Mary.”
“He went to Richard Vance and made a deal.”
My father, the man I had loved and cared for until his dying breath, had blackmailed a monster.
“He told Richard he would hide me and raise the baby as his own,” Julia revealed.
“In exchange, Richard paid off all of your husband’s massive gambling debts.”
“And he promised to never come after this farm.”
I felt physically sick to my stomach.
My entire existence in this family was the result of a financial transaction.
I was a bargaining chip used to pay off a gambling addiction.
“But why did you have to disappear?” I asked Julia.
“Because Richard didn’t trust me to stay quiet,” she replied.
“He sent men to the house one night while your supposed father was out drinking.”
“I barely escaped through the back window into the woods.”
She squeezed my hand one last time before letting go.
“I had to leave you here, because carrying a newborn through the swamp would have gotten us both killed.”
“I have spent the last forty-one years hiding, building a new life, and waiting for Richard to die.”
May you like
“He passed away last month.”
“That is why I finally came back for you.”
