Chapter 10 - A New Legacy

It took six months for the legal dust to finally settle.
The EPA arrived at the farm the day after the broadcast in full hazmat gear.
They excavated the land behind the barn and found exactly what Julia had described.
Dozens of rusting metal barrels leaking highly toxic chemicals into the groundwater.
Vanguard Development was immediately dismantled by the federal government.
Their assets were seized, and Marcus Vance was sentenced to federal prison for attempted murder and environmental terrorism.
Steven did not escape justice, either.
He was charged as an accomplice to the crimes and sentenced to five years in a minimum-security facility.
I didn't attend his trial, and I refused to answer his phone calls from prison.
The old farmhouse had burned entirely to the ground, leaving nothing but ash and memories.
The government paid a massive settlement to Julia for the destruction of her property and the contamination of her land.
With the settlement money, Julia bought a beautiful new home closer to the city.
I was sitting on the back patio of her new house, drinking a cup of coffee.
Mom was in the kitchen, helping Julia bake a pie.
The dynamic between the three of us was complicated, but it was healing.
Mom had finally filed for divorce from the ghost of her abusive, gambling husband.
She was learning to stand on her own two feet for the first time in her life.
Julia and I were slowly building the mother-daughter relationship that had been stolen from us.
We spent hours talking about her past, my childhood, and the letters I had finally read.
She was incredibly strong, and I saw so much of myself in her resilience.
The back door opened, and Julia walked out holding a slice of warm apple pie.
She set it down on the table in front of me and smiled.
“How is the new business plan coming along?” she asked, sitting next to me.
I closed my laptop and smiled back at her.
“It’s coming along perfectly,” I replied.
I was using my portion of the settlement to start an environmental consulting firm.
I wanted to make sure that corrupt corporations could never destroy another family's land again.
“I think your father would have hated it,” Mom called out from the kitchen window, laughing lightly.
“Good,” Julia and I said at the exact same time.
We looked at each other and burst into laughter.
The secret was finally out, the lies were burned away, and the truth had set us free.

I lost a brother and a fake father, but I gained a real mother and a true legacy.
For the first time in forty-one years, I knew exactly who I was.
