Chapter 6 - The Courtroom Showdown

The emergency custody and restraining order hearing was held on a rainy Friday morning.

Mark looked like a ghost. He sat at the respondent's table, his shoulders slumped, unable to meet my eyes. Beatrice insisted on being there, sitting in the gallery right behind him, radiating an aura of indignant fury.

The judge, a no-nonsense woman with a reputation for merciless rulings in child endangerment cases, read through the thick file Evelyn had prepared.

"Mr. Davis," the judge addressed Mark, peering over her glasses. "Your wife is requesting sole legal and physical custody of your son, citing your inability to protect the child from a known, lethal threat. Namely, your mother."

Mark stood up, his voice shaking. "Your Honor, I am a good father. I love my son. What happened was a tragedy, but it was a mistake. My mother just didn't understand the severity of asthma. I would never let her be alone with him again, but to strip me of my rights is completely unfair!"

From the gallery, Beatrice couldn't contain herself. "It wasn't a tragedy! The boy was being disrespectful! I was teaching him a lesson that his mother clearly refused to—"

"Bailiff!" the judge barked, her gavel slamming down like a gunshot. "Remove that woman from my courtroom immediately!"

Beatrice shrieked as two deputies grabbed her by the arms, dragging her out while she yelled about how the system was corrupt.

The judge turned a lethal glare back to Mark. "Mr. Davis, your mother is facing felony criminal charges for attempting to discipline the oxygen out of your child's lungs. And yet, the very night your son was on a ventilator, you prioritized bailing her out of jail. You are an enabler to a dangerous, delusional woman."

The judge signed the papers with a vicious flick of her pen.

"Sole physical and legal custody is awarded to the mother. Mr. Davis, you are granted supervised visitation for two hours every Saturday at a state facility. If you allow your mother anywhere near that boy, you will join her in a jail cell."
