Chapter 5 - The Smear Campaign

Beatrice couldn't handle losing control.

When the reality set in that she was facing felony charges that carried a potential sentence of two to ten years in state prison, her defense mechanism kicked into overdrive: she played the victim.

By Tuesday, my phone was blowing up. Beatrice had taken to Facebook.

She posted a long, tearful status update that spread like wildfire among our extended family and social circle. “Please pray for my family. My daughter-in-law, Rachel, is having a mental breakdown. She is using my precious grandson’s mild asthma as an excuse to keep him from me and my son. I made a simple mistake with his medication, and now she is trying to send an innocent grandmother to prison out of spite. Please pray for her heart.”

The comments were a cesspool of enabling relatives calling me unhinged, controlling, and cruel.

Mark’s sister left me a blistering voicemail calling me a homewrecker.

I didn't respond to any of it. I didn't engage in the online drama. Instead, I let my attorney do the talking. Evelyn filed a massive defamation suit against Beatrice within twenty-four hours, attaching the official EMT report, the emergency room intake documents, and the police body-cam transcripts.

Evelyn also conveniently leaked the public 911 dispatch audio to a local Chicago news reporter.

By Wednesday evening, Beatrice wasn't a poor, misunderstood grandmother on Facebook anymore. The local news ran a segment titled: Grandmother Arrested After Withholding Asthma Inhaler From Suffocating 8-Year-Old.

The audio of Noah wheezing, begging for his life, while Beatrice calmly told me he was "throwing a fit" was broadcast to the entire city.

The comments on her Facebook page shifted from sympathy to absolute, unadulterated horror. Beatrice deleted her account by midnight.
