Chapter 7 - The Ascent

“Spread out! Secure the stairwells and the lifts!” Victor’s voice echoed through a megaphone, drifting up the open elevator shafts. “Bring her to me. Kill the electrician.”

Julian stood in the center of the 45th floor, watching his tablet screen. The building was lined with temporary security cameras used to deter copper thieves. Julian had linked them to his iPad. He watched as the tactical teams split up, rushing into the dark stairwells.

“Let the games begin,” Julian muttered.

On the camera feed, the first team of five men reached the 40th floor. The lead enforcer grabbed the metal handle of the fire door to push it open.

Julian tapped a button on his tablet.

The moment the man’s skin touched the metal handle, a massive surge of industrial current hit him. The enforcer was thrown backward violently, slamming into his comrades. The smell of burning rubber and ozone wafted up the shafts. The remaining men in the stairwell panicked, firing blindly into the dark concrete, completely terrified of an enemy they couldn't see.

On the 42nd floor, another team tried to bypass the stairs by climbing the scaffolding outside the building. They stepped off the metal rigging onto the concrete deck, completely ignoring the fact that Julian had triggered the sprinklers, leaving two inches of standing water on the floor.

Julian watched them on the screen, waited until all six men were standing in the puddle, and hit the second switch.

A blinding blue flash illuminated the 42nd floor. The men collapsed simultaneously, their weapons clattering into the electrified water.

Julian had neutralized half of Victor’s army without throwing a single punch.

But Victor wasn't stupid. Realizing the stairwells and scaffolding were death traps, he and his elite guards moved to the center of the building.

“They’re overriding the freight elevator manually from the basement,” Julian said, checking the power grid. “They’re coming straight up to us.”

Julian grabbed his heavy steel wrench and stood in front of Clara, placing himself between her and the heavy metal doors of the elevator. The hum of the massive gears began to echo through the empty floor as the metal box rose toward them.
