Chapter 10 - The Calm After the Storm

By the time the Chicago Police Department arrived, Julian had restored the standard power to the building and carried Clara down to the street.
The FBI had been tracking Victor Vargas for years but lacked the evidence to take him down. Finding his broken body at the base of the Orion Tower, along with dozens of his enforcers incapacitated by electrical burns inside the building, gave them everything they needed.
Because Julian had acted in absolute self-defense, and because Clara’s testimony provided the FBI with the location of Victor’s offshore accounts and trafficking ledgers, the District Attorney granted them full immunity.
They were free. Truly, finally free.
Three Months Later
The morning sun filtered brightly through the windows of their new apartment in the suburbs. It smelled of fresh coffee, blooming eucalyptus, and baby powder.
Julian stood by the crib, his calloused fingers gently stroking the impossibly soft cheek of their newborn daughter, Maya. She had Clara’s dark hair and Julian’s stubborn chin.
He was wearing a fresh flannel shirt, preparing to head out to his new job as the Lead Inspector for the city’s electrical grid.
Clara walked into the nursery, looking radiant and healthy. The bruising on her leg had long faded into a faint, silver scar—a reminder of a past she had survived, not a cage that held her.
She wrapped her arms around Julian’s waist from behind, resting her chin on his broad shoulder as they watched their daughter sleep.
“She’s perfect,” Clara whispered.
“She’s safe,” Julian replied softly, turning to kiss his wife. “We all are.”

He pulled the light, knitted blanket up over Maya’s tiny shoulders. For the first time in their lives, a blanket wasn't a shield to hide terrifying secrets or unbearable pain.
It was just warmth. It was just love. And as Julian held Clara close, the dark storm that had nearly destroyed them finally broke, leaving nothing but light in its wake.
