Chapter 7 - The Chase

I couldn't breathe. History was repeating itself. He had taken my son, just like he had taken his first family.
I bolted for the parking lot, my mind racing. Where would he go? He knew his identity was compromised; he must have checked the lockbox after I left. He was running, but Elias Thorne didn't leave loose ends. He would want to finish the job.
I pulled out my phone and opened the 'Find My Family' app. David had insisted on installing it on all our devices for 'safety.' He had turned his phone off, but Leo... I had sewn an Apple AirTag into the lining of Leo’s favorite stuffed bear, the one he never went anywhere without.
I checked the app. A small blue dot pinged on the map, moving rapidly north on Route 9, heading toward the dense, isolated logging roads of the Blackwood Mountains.

I slammed my foot on the gas. The tires screeched as I tore out of the hospital lot. The rain began to fall, turning into a torrential downpour as I left the city limits. I called 911, screaming at the dispatcher to send State Troopers to Route 9, but they were miles away. It was just me.
Ahead of me, in the blinding rain, I saw the faint red glow of taillights turning onto a muddy, unpaved road.
