Chapter 6 - The Great Escape

"No!" I pulled the bag back sharply, offering a forced, exhausted laugh. "It’s full of dirty clothes and my pumping gear from the trip. It’s a mess. I’ll just throw it in the car."
David stared at the bag for a long, agonizing second, then shrugged. "Suit yourself."
As soon as I was in my car, I locked the doors and called Stan. "I have the proof. Passports, journals. Everything."
"Good," Stan said, the relief evident in his gruff voice. "Don't go to the local precinct, he might have charmed them already. Bring it to the State Police headquarters downtown. I have a buddy there, Detective Miller. I’ll call him now."
"I have to get Leo first," I said, putting the car in drive.
"Rachel, don't. The hospital is secure. Go to the police first!"
"I am not leaving my son alone with that monster for another second!" I hung up the phone and sped toward Crestview General. My plan was simple: get to Leo's room, demand an immediate discharge, and drive straight to the State Police.
But when I reached the pediatric ICU and threw open the door to Room 412, the bed was empty. The monitors were turned off. The sheets were stripped.
A nurse walked by holding a clipboard. "Oh, Mrs. Vance! You just missed them."
May you like
"Missed who?" I choked out.
"Your husband. He presented a signed medical proxy and checked Leo out against medical advice about twenty minutes ago. Said he was transferring him to a private specialist."
