Chapter 9 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

The heavy wooden doors of the ballroom burst open, and a squad of FBI agents marched in.
They bypassed the confused, whispering guests and headed straight for the stage.
“Richard and Serena Sterling, you are under arrest for federal fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy,” the lead agent announced.
Handcuffs clicked loudly as they were apprehended in front of the entire city's elite.
Serena screamed, thrashing against the agents as they escorted her off the stage, her crimson dress dragging on the floor.
Richard kept his head down, utterly defeated, knowing his empire had just crumbled to dust.
Cameras flashed frantically as reporters who had snuck into the gala captured the explosive downfall.
I watched them being shoved into the back of police cruisers, feeling a strange sense of peace wash over me.
The poison was finally drawn out.
The following weeks were a blur of legal proceedings and corporate restructuring.
Elias published his massive exposé, providing all the damning evidence to the public.
Vance Tech’s stock skyrocketed as investors praised my swift, decisive action in rooting out corruption.
I bought out the Sterling family’s shares for pennies on the dollar, securing total, unquestionable control of my company.
But the wealth didn't feel the same anymore; it wasn't a weapon, and it wasn't a shield.
It was just a tool.
I fired the shallow, sycophantic staff at my cliffside estate and put the massive house on the market.
It was too cold, too sterile, and it held too many memories of a life I no longer wished to live.
I realized that no amount of imported marble or luxury vehicles could buy the one thing I actually needed.
I needed a home.
And I knew exactly where to find it.
I hired a private investigator to track down the bank that had foreclosed on my childhood home all those years ago.
It took some aggressive negotiating, but I purchased the property back, paying double the asking price in cash.
When I brought my father to the old neighborhood, he didn't know what to expect.
We pulled into the familiar, cracked driveway of the modest two-story house.
He looked at the old oak tree in the front yard, tears welling up in his eyes instantly.
“Jules,” he whispered, his hands trembling as he covered his mouth.
“How did you do this?”

“I just bought our home back, Dad,” I replied, handing him the shiny new brass keys.
“It’s yours, free and clear, forever.”
