Chapter 8 - The Masterpiece Destroyed

Serena glided up to the stage, the spotlight tracking her every elegant movement.
She grabbed the golden microphone, flashing her trademark, dazzling smile at the wealthy audience.
“Thank you all for coming tonight to support the Sterling Foundation,” she began, her voice dripping with fake sincerity.
“We pride ourselves on honesty, integrity, and giving back to the community.”
From my pocket, I pulled out a small, remote device I had synced to the museum’s audiovisual system earlier that day.
As Serena raised her glass for a toast, I pressed the glowing red button.
The massive screens behind her, which were supposed to show pictures of smiling children, suddenly glitched.
The soft classical music cut out, replaced by the jarring sound of a recorded phone call.
“I don’t care if the toxic runoff is poisoning their water supply, just pay off the local officials and double the mining output.”
Richard Sterling’s voice echoed through the massive ballroom, crystal clear and undeniably authentic.
The crowd gasped in unison, lowering their champagne glasses in utter shock.
Serena turned around, dropping her glass as the screens displayed high-resolution images of the illegal mines.
Bank statements appeared next, showing millions of dollars being funneled from the charity foundation into Serena’s personal accounts.
“Turn it off!” Richard screamed, rushing toward the soundboard booth.
“Someone cut the power right now!”
But I had locked the system down with military-grade encryption; nobody was turning it off.
The next piece of audio played, and this time, it was Serena’s voice.
“Julian’s father is a disgusting, homeless rat. I can’t wait until we take over the company so I never have to see his pathetic face again.”
The silence in the room was deafening.
The elite crowd stared at the stage in absolute horror, the flawless facade of the Sterling family shattered into a million pieces.
I walked slowly down the center aisle, my father standing tall right beside me.
Serena looked at me, tears of genuine panic streaming down her ruined makeup.
“Julian, please,” she begged into the microphone, her voice trembling.
“Tell them this is a deepfake, tell them it’s a joke!”
I stopped at the edge of the stage, looking up at the woman who had tried to break my family.
“You wanted to destroy me, Serena,” I said loudly, ensuring the entire room heard me.
“But you forgot one very important detail.”
I smiled, a genuine, relieved smile.

“I build the systems that hold your secrets.”
Suddenly, the wail of police sirens echoed from the street outside, growing louder and closer.
