Chapter 15 - The Catwalk Pursuit

"Secure the prisoner! Get the hostage to the paramedics!" Lieutenant Briggs ordered, as two SWAT officers vaulted out of the Jeep to slap restraints on Moretti and cut the zip-ties from David’s wrists.

I rushed out of the driver’s seat, throwing my arms around my son as David collapsed onto the gravel, weeping with relief as I checked his bruised face. "You’re safe now, David," I whispered, holding him tight against my shoulder. "Mommy’s got you. It’s over."

But as I looked up toward the loading dock, my heart dropped.

Sarah hadn't stayed by the vehicle. In the chaos of the SWAT deployment and David’s rescue, my daughter had dropped her briefcase onto the gravel, grabbed a heavy iron tire iron from the Jeep’s floorboard, and sprinted across the loading dock straight into the dark, cavernous interior of the textile mill right behind Julian.

"Sarah! No!" I screamed, letting go of David and running toward the iron doors with Lieutenant Briggs and Agent Sterling charging right beside me.

The interior of the D Street textile mill was a nightmare of shadows, echoing drips, and rusting iron structures. Four stories of open catwalks, conveyor belts, and massive spinning looms towered above us in the dim morning light filtering through broken skylights.

"Julian! Show yourself!" Sarah’s voice echoed off the distant brick walls, vibrating with a fierce, fearless rage that chilled the blood. "You don't get to run away and hide in the dark anymore! You tied my son to a radiator! You left me to starve in a cellar! Come out and face me like a man!"

"Sarah! Stay back! We have tactical clearance!" Lieutenant Briggs shouted, sweeping his flashlight across the second-story iron catwalks above us.

Suddenly, a gunshot rang out from the fourth-story overhead platform. A 38-caliber bullet ricocheted off a steel support beam six feet from Sarah’s head, showering us in rust and chipping paint.

"Stay back! All of you stay back or I’ll put the next round in her chest!" Julian’s hysterical voice screamed from the highest catwalk, forty feet above the concrete factory floor. We could see his silhouette pacing frantically along the narrow iron grating, his revolver pointing down toward us in the gloom. "This is your fault, Sarah! You ruined everything! If you had just signed that paper on Saturday, we could have lived like kings! We could have had a real family!"

"You don't know the meaning of the word family, Julian!" Sarah shouted back, refusing to retreat an inch as she stepped into a patch of light on the factory floor, her chin raised in absolute defiance. "You’re a parasite! You prey on women and children because you’re too weak to survive on your own! And now you’re going to spend the next thirty years in a federal prison cell where your mob debts will follow you into the yard!"

"I’m not going to prison!" Julian shrieked, leaning over the iron handrail, his face contorted into a mask of pure madness. He raised the silver revolver, taking deliberate, two-handed aim directly at Sarah’s heart. "I’m taking you with me, Sarah! If I die today, you die first!"
