Chapter 12 - The Trojan Horse

At 4:00 AM, the Blackwood Ridge cabin was transformed into a tactical briefing room. Rachel Thorne sat handcuffed to a heavy iron pipe under the kitchen sink, gagged with a strip of medical tape after she refused to stop screaming threats at Sarah. At the dining table, Detective Miller, Agent Sterling, and the tactical SWAT commander, Lieutenant Briggs, were laying out the blueprints of the D Street textile mill under the glow of portable LED lanterns.
"Julian is expecting Rachel to arrive at the mill’s rear loading dock at dawn driving an untraceable, off-grid vehicle," Agent Sterling explained, pointing her pen at a narrow alleyway on the northern side of the industrial complex. "He doesn't know she was captured. If we send a tactical SWAT van or marked police cruisers within two blocks of that mill, Russo’s lookouts on the roof will spot them, and Moretti will execute David before our breach teams can even get through the steel doors."
"So we give Julian exactly what he’s expecting," I said, stepping forward with the keys to Thomas’s 1998 Jeep Cherokee dangling from my fingers. "We send the mountain Jeep."
Lieutenant Briggs looked up from the blueprints, his brow furrowing. "Mrs. Vance, with all due respect, we cannot send civilians into a fortified hostage exchange with organized crime enforcers."
"I’m not asking you to let us walk into a slaughterhouse alone, Lieutenant," Sarah said, leaning over the table beside me, her eyes burning with cold, tactical determination. "Look at the dimensions of that 1998 Cherokee. It has tinted rear windows and a cargo cabin large enough to hold three fully armed tactical SWAT officers concealed under camping blankets. My mother and I will drive the Jeep into the loading dock just as Julian requested. When he steps out of the mill with my brother to make the exchange, your men breach from the back of the vehicle and take the loading dock."
"It’s too dangerous, Sarah," Detective Miller objected, shaking his head. "If Julian spots the setup before David is physically out of Moretti’s hands—"
"Julian is a coward who relies on women to do his dirty work," Sarah interrupted, her voice rock-steady. "He spent four months acting like a charming gentleman because he doesn't have the stomach for direct violence unless his victim is tied up with duct tape. When he sees his wife and his elderly mother sitting in that Jeep instead of Rachel, his first instinct won't be to shoot—it will be to try and manipulate us into handing over the trust deed. That three-second hesitation is all your SWAT officers need to secure my brother."
Agent Sterling looked at Sarah for a long, silent minute, evaluating the psychological profile of the husband who had betrayed her. Slowly, a professional smile touched the agent’s lips. "She’s right, Marcus. Julian’s entire scheme has been built on arrogance and the belief that he is smarter than the women around him. He won't expect Sarah to walk straight into the lion’s den without a signed surrender document."
After thirty minutes of intense debate and safety protocol adjustments, the Trojan Horse plan was approved. At 5:30 AM, while the eastern sky was just beginning to turn a pale, bruised purple, three elite SWAT officers dressed in black ballistic armor and carrying suppressed submachine guns climbed into the back of the old Jeep Cherokee, pulling heavy wool hunting blankets over their gear.
I climbed into the driver’s seat, adjusting my glasses and gripping the worn leather steering wheel that my late husband had held for so many years. Sarah sat in the passenger seat beside me, wearing her heavy winter coat, with a certified decoy copy of the Leo Vance Trust deed tucked into her leather briefcase.

"Are you ready for this, Mom?" Sarah asked quietly as I turned the ignition key, waking the old 4.0-liter engine with a deep, mechanical growl.
"I’ve been ready since the moment I saw my grandson tied to that radiator, Sarah," I replied, shifting the transmission into drive. "Let’s go get my son back."
