Chapter 8 - The Desperate Intrusion

Chloe had nothing left. Her offshore accounts were tied to Vanguard, which meant her money was frozen in the SEC investigation. Her reputation with the press was destroyed. Her social standing was vaporized.

She was desperate, and desperate people make fatal mistakes.

That night, a severe thunderstorm rolled over the city. I was sitting in my dark living room, a single reading lamp illuminating the book in my lap. The house was dead quiet. I had dismissed the staff for the evening.

At 11:42 PM, I heard the subtle shatter of glass from the back terrace.

Chloe hadn't brought a gun—she wasn't a killer, just a coward. But she had brought a crowbar, smashing through the French doors. She thought she could sneak into my safe, steal some bearer bonds or jewelry, and disappear into the night.

She crept into the living room, soaked in rain, mascara running down her face, looking like a drowned rat.

"Looking for this?" I asked, my voice cutting through the dark.

She shrieked, dropping the crowbar.

I turned on the overhead lights. I was sitting in the armchair, holding the pristine diamond engagement ring she had left on her vanity days ago.

"Alexander!" she gasped, trembling violently. "I... I just came to get my things. You changed the locks!"

"I changed everything, Chloe," I said, standing up. I walked toward her. She scrambled backward until her back hit the wall.

"You did this," she whispered, realization finally crashing over her. "The bank cards. The journalist. Vanguard. It was all you."

"You threatened my mother in my own house," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, yet it filled the room with an undeniable, crushing weight. "You dug your nails into her skin. You told her to go to a nursing home, or you would isolate her from her only son."

"I was angry! I didn't mean it!" she sobbed, sliding down the wall to her knees.

"I meant every single thing I did to you," I replied coldly. "You wanted a ruthless billionaire, Chloe. You thought my silence was weakness. You thought a man who says 'please' and 'thank you' didn't know how to slaughter his enemies."

I tossed the engagement ring onto the floor by her knees.

"I built my empire in the dark. I survive by seeing three moves ahead. You were never playing a game with me, Chloe. You were just a piece on my board. And now, you're removed."

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder, cutting through the thunder.
