Chapter 2 - The Architecture of Ruin

I didn't sleep that night. After sitting with my mother until she finally dozed off in her room, I retreated to my home office. It was a dark, oak-paneled room that overlooked the city skyline—a city I had conquered piece by piece over the last decade.
I poured myself three fingers of neat scotch and booted up my secure terminal.
Chloe thought my kicking her out was a moment of emotional outrage. She thought she could buy time, apologize, and manipulate her way back into my bed. She fundamentally misunderstood who I was. I didn't kick her out because I was angry; I kicked her out to clear the battlefield.
I made a phone call. It rang twice.
"Boss," Marcus answered. Marcus wasn't a corporate lawyer; he was the head of a private intelligence firm that operated entirely in the gray areas of the law. He had been on my retainer for five years.
"Marcus. I need a full, unrestricted deep dive on Chloe Vance. I want everything. Bank records, deleted emails, burner phones, her entire romantic and financial history going back to high school. Leave no stone unturned."
"I thought you already vetted her before the engagement?" Marcus asked, confused.
"I vetted the persona she wanted me to see," I replied, taking a sip of the burning scotch. "Now I want to see the monster. I need to know exactly what she's hiding, who she's working with, and what her backup plans are."
"You got it. Give me twenty-four hours."
By 3:00 AM, my phone buzzed with the first batch of encrypted files. I read through them as the city slept. The scale of her deception was staggering, almost impressive in its audacity.
Chloe wasn't just a socialite looking for a wealthy husband. She was a professional parasite. The file revealed a pattern: three previous engagements to high-net-worth individuals in London and Dubai. None of them ended in marriage, but all of them ended in massive, quiet settlements secured through emotional blackmail and fabricated scandals.
But the most interesting detail was a recurring wire transfer. Every month, Chloe sent a significant sum to an offshore account registered to a shell company in the Cayman Islands.
I spent the rest of the night tracing that shell company. By dawn, I had a name.
Julian Thorne.
Julian was the CEO of Vanguard Equities, my biggest rival in the tech sector. He had been trying to launch a hostile takeover of my flagship AI subsidiary for a year.

Chloe wasn't just a gold digger. She was a corporate spy. And Julian was her handler.
I leaned back in my leather chair, watching the sunrise paint the skyscrapers in hues of blood orange. A slow, cold smile crept across my face. They wanted to play a high-stakes game. But they didn't realize they had just handed me the nuclear codes.
