Bail was set high. Because the fraud exceeded $100,000, they were looking at real prison time.
The extended family, who had been ready to crucify me days prior, suddenly went dead silent when the arrest records became public. My mother’s sisters tried to call me to beg for mercy, but I simply sent them the security footage of how Lira and Leo had been treated.
Not one of them called me back.

Valerie’s public defender threw my mother under the bus, claiming Valerie was just a dependent following her mother's financial directions. My mother’s lawyer fired back, stating Valerie had coerced the mother into the spending spree and was the mastermind behind isolating Lira.

They fought like rabid dogs in the courtroom during the preliminary hearings. It was a pathetic, ugly display of two women who had built their entire bond on the oppression of someone else. Once the victim was removed, they only had each other to tear apart.
I didn't attend the hearings. I was too busy repairing my own life.
